That puts them at less than $10 per POUND in about 5 years. Get ready to invest.Scotthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17187593131471733667noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17555522.post-62121242076801035862008-03-08T04:54:00.000-08:002008-03-08T04:54:00.000-08:00What about using carbon nanotube sheets to make sa...What about using carbon nanotube sheets to make sails for sailboats? Spinnaker nylon which is about the lightest they have still weighs about 14 g/m2. Most sail material weighs 2 or 3or more times that weight, and is very prone to tearing. Heavier more durable sail material, "Dacron," weighs generally between 7-10 oz or 200-300 g/m2. Carbon fiber ia alresdy used to strengthen sails, generally for high peerformance racing for boats and owners with very deep pockets. Furthermore what about making carbon fiber masts out of sheets of carbon nanotubes. Even furthermore than that, what about replacing rhe fiberglass in fiberglass with carbon nanotube sheets impregnated with epoxy for stiffness. Wow CN sheets are really going to break open new industries very soon.sail4evrhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00651613055715967181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17555522.post-18657976906141039692008-03-03T07:59:00.000-08:002008-03-03T07:59:00.000-08:00btw: Welcome to slashdot readers. This would be the...btw: Welcome to slashdot readers.

This would be the first article that I have had that has officially made it as a central focus on slashdot.bwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07541279438184352860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17555522.post-12368292014197363142008-03-03T04:54:00.000-08:002008-03-03T04:54:00.000-08:00As I said before wonderfull news. Thanks for the an...As I said before wonderfull news.
Thanks for the answer :)Lobo7922http://www.blogger.com/profile/00893503533385321558noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17555522.post-86455012031622150142008-03-02T09:53:00.000-08:002008-03-02T09:53:00.000-08:00Prices for carbon nanotubes are projected to fall ...Prices for carbon nanotubes are projected to fall many times over the next few years

They have about 100 tons/yr production now. But there several factories that are expected to be built over the next few years to up production to thousands of tons per year. Currently carbon fiber has about 30000 tons per year of production. So as you get up to those volumes you can get down to about the same price. twenty to one hundred times cheaper. This should happen before 2014 with substantial drops in price each year.bwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07541279438184352860noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-17555522.post-52525686100703267092008-03-01T14:03:00.000-08:002008-03-01T14:03:00.000-08:00Grettings Brian, this are very good news. This make...Grettings Brian, this are very good news.
This make me think in the gravitational telescope, The development of cheap solar sails would make the making of a gravitational telescope a reality earlier than we think.
But do you have any idea of the price that this is reaching? do you think this will become cheaper on time?Lobo7922http://www.blogger.com/profile/00893503533385321558noreply@blogger.com
